I love our street

September 16, 2008

Our friends from the city came to visit today. We went walking for some en plein air. Chased some cows. Walked home in the windy spring weather. Ate cake and drank tea. Lovely...

Good morning from the great room. It’s a frosty morning outside, fingers are frozen to the bone and it actually feels warmer inside than out for once. Plans for today include sitting by the fire, reading books and eating toasted sandwiches. Might get the jaffle iron out and cook them in the fire. Have a lovely Sunday folks! .

Gosh I love a hefty cake and there’s nothing lightweight about this solid offering. When both @annabellehickson and @exchangestoresnundle posted versions of this quince and walnut cake recipe, I had to whip one up myself. Due to a fun job developing some snack ideas for @walnutsaustralia I’ve lots of delicious new season nuts in the house and this cake is loaded with them. Both roasted in the cake and then topped with sugary salted ones. Walnuts in the shell, if you slide to the final picture, you’ll notice, also make excellent kitten toys. I’ll post the cake recipe in stories for you if you need to bake a hefty cake yourself.
As is, where is. Real life kitchen, with the kettle boiling. Forgot to style it, heck I forgot to even wipe down the benches. A shabby tea towel, dishes in the sink and the floor needs a mop. But I was so taken by the light here, forgot about those other things. There’s something so inviting about a well-lit kitchen. A well-lit real kitchen is even better. .

Three images of the Bank Manager’s Office; today, one year ago, and 114 years ago. Hard to believe it’s exactly a year since we wandered through this house with the real estate agent, with the crazy idea to buy this run down, drafty former bank/hospital/employment agency/antique store. The second image is what we saw when we visited, wish that rug was still there. The last image, is one I found after spending many hours on the heritage archives website. A photo from a glass plate negative from the library of Mr Bernard Walker, regarded as the last of the ‘gentleman architects’ of Tasmania. I assume at the time, that is 1906, young Bernard, a trainee architect, was sent down to the wild southern outpost of Franklin to report back to his firm Walker (no relation) & Salier’s newly finished fancy bank. Would been quite the journey back then, some 30 miles on a dirt track, across a mountain range and winding forest trails. Hope he took a packed lunch, (Hm
The longest night. We’re celebrating the solstice with fires, candles and walks along the river in the gloaming. Maybe a glass of something warming.
Olive oil in a biscuit? Why yes indeed. Peppery, spicy with a fruity kick, @bertollioliveoil_australia Olive Oil makes for a crunchy textured biscuit that’s frankly got me eating way too many. I’ve done the hard yards for you, got creative in the kitchen and tested this recipe quite a few times in a quest for the perfect biscuit to have with my morning coffee. Okay, I may have tested more than required, I warn you they’re hard to resist. Loaded with almonds with a touch of fennel seeds and orange zest, rest assured they’re a cinch to make. Make a batch to dunk in your coffee, or crumble over ice cream, you can thank (or curse) me later. #CreatedWithBertolli
Olive Oil and Almond Biscotti with Fennel and Orange
300g plain flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
180g sugar
grated zest of 1 orange
2 eggs
1 cup almonds, roughly chopped
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking pow
Wish I could say I spent the day lounging about right here. Sadly not. However today’s been quite productive, ticking lots off the to-do list. Here’s an image from a soon to be guest room, I’ve been playing around with the styling and this image features the lovely Charlotte portrait from the very talented @marleyandlockyer ...isn’t she darling? Righto, back to it, a few more recipes to finish up for a client, prep for a shoot here tomorrow and whip up a quick Vicki sponge to celebrate HRH birthday, I’m thinking I’ll fill it summer’s raspberry jam and mascarpone cream. Ready to ease ourselves into a busy week. .

Kitten photobomb! The last few weeks I’ve been working through @nataliewalton brilliant @thestylingmasterclass It’s been so good to really drill deep into the theory of styling and learn how to better evaluate my work. You know when you do something and it’s not quite right, but you can’t figure out why? The self assessment checklist is a game changer for me. Here’s an outtake from this week’s homework...an autumnal breakfast scene, with Les the kitten pouncing on the toast. .

Former bank managers office, note the edge of the fancy fireplace. There’s a bee’s nest at the top of this chimney and sometimes I can hear the buzz of the hive echoing down through the fireplace. If you stick your head up the the chimney you’ll hear them loud and clear, and you might notice chunks of old honeycomb that have fallen into the hearth. .

More kitten content, because that’s how we spend our Saturdays. Keeping young Les here out of mischief.
